Looks can be deceiving! Looking in through the front window the place looks very appealing, nice ambience, old world style. And that’s where it ends. Terrible, rude service…. Especially by the older woman that acted like the owner or manager. Completely oblivious on how to treat customers, but the other waitresses weren’t much better. When we weren’t being ignored, we were being treated like we should be thanking them for being in their café. It really was that bad. Examples in order: Waitresses incapable of taking more than one drink order at a time. My drink would come out, then my friend, then my other friend. By the time the last drink came out, the first coffee was finished. During the ordering process, there’s no acknowledgment, no eye contact, no manners… no confirmation that anything else is required. And if you pause for even one moment, they run away before the order is complete. We had to clear our own table. Trying to get the waitresses to do it after waiting patiently, was impossible. They either don’t see the empty plates and cups, or simply don’t care. Either way, poor service. We stacked the empty plates in a neat pile on the table as there was no space for anything else, and even when the waitress came over to deliver a drink, she left empty handed. My daughter had an iPad on low (the place was quite busy and loud and the device was on so quietly that my 2 friends and I couldn’t hear it at all while talking), and the older woman came over and without saying anything else or looking in our direction when putting coffee down she said “you can turn that thing off, or you can turn it down”. And then promptly walked away without a second glance. No follow up! No "Would you like anything else?" I finished my coffee and virtually had to beg for another. One unisex toilet… and with a café full of women, having to line up like that is ridiculous. Lastly, not cheap…. Eggs benedict, 2 coffees, a milkshake, and a side of pancakes = $50. Avoid!!! Avoid!!! Avoid!!! Don’t fall for what you see out the front, the inside is rotten.
I went in here with my wife (we were on a trip to the area from Castle Hill Sydney) I was intrigued by the decor of the place - it looks like you are sitting in a grand old style library with a fixation on elephants. I must say that we really enjoyed the meal and the ambience. I found the food delicious as I had a homemade pie, coffee was ok too. Although we had a good experience on the day we went in there, it seems a great shame that are a number of very negative comments here about this cafe, and it would seem like it is "pot luck" as to whether you receive a good experience or a bad one, initially I would have definately gone back here - but now I am not too sure. I really hope that the owners take the time to actually take notice of those bad comments and address the issues which clearly exist - as it would be a shame to keep seeing those when I personally had a good experience here.
I am a frequent visitor to Bowral and on many occasions have stopped in and had either lunch or morning tea at this cafe and have always been made feel welcome until a few months ago when I met a friend for morning tea. We ordered our coffee and then enquired about something to go with it. We were told that the bakery had not delivered any cakes or pastries so we were offered a "cookie". We chatted and drank our coffee with no sign of a "cookie" in sight then readied to leave. It was as we were leaving that the cookie finally arrived and I politely declined it as we were leaving. On arrival at the counter to pay we were spoken to very rudely by the owner who was obviously having a bad day....Such a shame that in the wink of an eye a reputation can be soured. . No more Elephant Boy for me......
Had the best breakfast in the Southern Highlands last Sunday at The Elephant Boy Cafe next to the cinema on Bong Bong Street. The eggs were perfectly cooked and all the sides were just as yummy. Got us through till dinner. Great service...Claudia (the glamorous hostess) wizzes past making sure all are welcome and well looked after. Lovely atmosphere and not your normal cafe....books everywhere and colonial decor reminiscent of another era. Loved the little elephants everywhere. Lastly you must try their homemade sauces and condiments....best curry sauces and so easy to cook with, sure beats those ones you buy from the supermarket. Ps The mixed berry jam is divine...Thoroughly recommend the Elephant Boy Cafe. I am going to be a regular for sure!
But a great place, the owner, very nice and friendly. He talks to everybody. Nice old lady. A magical place filled with hundreds of old books. Well, cakes :) I was impressed carrot cake :) worth a visit, it is worth a try :) I recommend
Spent what was otherwise a great sunday in Bowral. Biggest mistake was venturing into the Elephant Boy Cafe and ordering a chicken curry which when it arrived looked nothing like an authentic curry. Extremely bland with virtually no actual curry content and chicken with a very high amount of fat and on reflection seemed under-cooked. Provided feedback to a lady i assumed was the manager and was dismissed outright. Was not interested in the least. Place might appear enticing but the service and food is absolutely garbage.
Go for the decor. Do not go for the service. It is crap. The food is alright, but nothing too memorable. Just go for coffees and move on for lunch elsewhere. Their waiters are nice enough, but are not at all observant or quick on their feet. I found myself a table and sat at a table full of dirty dishes for ten minutes before having to ask for a menu, then was left standing at the counter for a further ten minutes waiting to pay. Not on if you are going to market yourself as a top-notch cafe.
Ignored! We were drawn to this cafe due to the bame and interior. We sat down and it all looked promising, as the cafe is cute with nice books and a cosy atmosphere. But unfortunately nobody acknowledged us or said "hello"..."we will be with you in a moment" or "here is a menu"...the waiter was preoccupied going back and forth to a table where his friend was sitting. We left and nipped down the road no.385 Canteen for coffee instead...
Went there today for lunch with my daughter. I had the Moroccan lamb burger ( nothing really Moroccan about it ). Burger was ok but lamb was a bit dry. Had cakes for dessert and again they were nice but smothered with cream which i didnt ask for. Coffee is nice a strong. Overall its the little things that irk me such as, i orderd tap water with my meal and it didnt come until i had to ask after finishing my meal.
We had lunch in Elephant Boy cafe while visiting Bowral. I was truly impressed by the amazing decoration and ambiance of the place. The food was also fabulous and the people who worked there were very polite and friendly. I definitely recommend this cafe to other people and I will go there again for sure. The only reason that I did not give a 5-star rating was that the only existing toilet was a bit out of whack.
