Last night was our third and last visit to Biota. We have great memories of the first time however disappointment has been our last experience. We did not choose the wine with meal option and ordered wine by the glass, wine was poured in degustation portion size - small- tasting size but charged by the glass price. The room has no vibe, the food was mostly COLD for an autumn menu and was blah (nothing outstanding) or just not paired right. Example was raw Mackerel with persimmon, such a strong oily flavour paired with such a mild fruit, this is where I needed the wine to offer some acidity to cut through the strong fish. From there the pork was so salty that was all you could taste, then a lovely beef, but then a drop of yogurt then a bland desert. Sorry Biota my love affair with you is over. Final note: in the past the staff took your coat at the door, not any more and when I asked him to check my coat they refused.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Biota and stayed overnight, availing ourselves of the food and accommodation package. The dining experience could not be faulted. The use of fresh, local produce plated together to create gorgeous and creative combos really set our tastebuds ablaze. Our own little Noma or Mugaritz tucked away in the Southern Highlands. The accommodation, while very small, was perfectly clean and adequate and was just a short stroll from the dining area. The peaceful ambience of the grounds carried through to the dining and bar area, and belied the busy road beyond the hedge and the kitchen garden. Well worth the drive and the expense for a special experience.
Dined here for lunch, had the tasting menu, food is interesting and tasty. For a 2 hatted restaurant the let down was the fact that there were many children running around, making noise. When you pay $200++ per head you expect a dining experience that reflects the cost. Also the service, while friendly is unprofessional, staff did not present or explain the dishes which is critical for a tasting menu, they also knew nothing about the wine list of food pairing. If you are ready to spend the money, I do not recommend this restaurant, we were looking forward to the experience but we left disappointed.
The food was fine but nothing spectacular as there are not many options for special occasion dining in the area. My sister was sick before we even got through starters and we asked to stop the tasting for her as she was too ill to enjoy the food. They were empty so it was not like we were taking up valuable table space. They charged the full amount for her. Seriously??? That is really poor form. At least have told us that they would charge us the full amount before hand. Very very disappointed.
We had a fantastic dining experience. Firstly the food was excellent. I tend to shy away from degustation these days but Biota do it very well: well paced, not too much food and importantly what we ate was uniformly delicious. Next, the booze: the sommelier recommended a chardy from Orange that we would have otherwise overlooked. Again, excellent. Lastly the staff were great, not too formal, up for a chat and appeared to be enjoying themselves. A great night overall.
Thank you Biota for a wonderful evening. The degustation certainly was a culinary experience that we thoroughly enjoyed. The matching wines were paired well. It was refreshing to have a fine dining experience with personable staff. Thankyou Georgia and Zac for the great hospitality, we will certainly be back.
Delightful grounds and a wonderful fitout provide the perfect environment to enjoy food that is all about the story. It may not be the most delicious meal you ever have (close though) but if you take the time to engage with the story of what is on your plate it just might be the best meal you ever have.
The setting of huge dining room is centred on a panoramic view of the busy chefs in the kitchen. The occasional hand clap request by the head chef to the wait staff as mains are dished out of the kitchen adds to the theatrics of the dining experience. Read more on our blog ChopinandMysaucepan.
The food ideas have merit but were not executed to the level you expect, the staff do not know what the wines are or why they are paired. The experience is great with good company but underwhelming if restaurant focused. This is essentially completly over priced with poor attention to detail.
Trading hours are lunch till 3pm we arrived at 2.15 with 4 empty tables and advised sorry we have nowhere to sit you???when he saw our confused look he said oh yeah and we have a wedding tonight too. Change your trading hours to what we feel like at the time
I have been to Biota a number of times a d everything is always exceptional from the service, the setting, to the food. I haf my Bridal Shower lunch here and loved it and so did my guests. I am keen to try the tapas at the bar too :)
Went here for a friends wedding and had a really good night. The food was delicious but the serving sizes left a bit to be desired. The grounds are beautiful and the open wood fireplaces really give the place a lovely charm.
My hubby and I celebrated our one year anniversary with a degustation lunch here. The food was fabulous as was the service provided by our waiter David. I had read great things about Biota and was not disappointed!
OMG Terrible food nothing complimented anything, complete rip off, very very expensive, we had to go to a takeaway on the way home! after paying $120.. we are local and shall be passing on our thoughts to others.
Great food and the service was exceptional. Must come back. The degustation is highly recommended. The ingredients used were fresh and interesting. An amazing combination of flavours.
This is a restaurant to be returned! Set in a beautiful garden setting, a very well decorated environment. We had lunch and the food was master chef quality. Service is excellent.
Drove from Sydney just to have lunch at Biota. It was definitely worth the drive. Restaurant was beautiful and food was great. A large list of wines to choose from.
Went there for our 10th wedding anniversary and we really enjoyed the experience. Very interesting taste combinations and great service
2nd visit, looking like our favourite Southern Highlands restaurant. Creative menu, fresh produce, friendly staff - outstanding.
Love this place. It is such a haven, set in beautiful grounds. The food is always perfect and coupled with great service.
The first time I went was really good. Went back over the weekend and the service was really terrible.
Amazing food, with a fantasitic sustainable philosophy and excellent service. Highly recommend
Outstanding experience, amazing food and wines in a relaxed environment, worth the hype.
Nice place to watch the ducks on the grass and have afternoon tea. Lovely outside area
Lovely garden beyond the deck/courtyard. Recommend their mac&cheese and croquettes
Love Biota and everything it offers. Certainly worth the trip to the Highlands!
